The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences with experience commensurate with the rank of Professor, Tenured. This is a unique opportunity to provide vision and leadership at a major research-intensive university with faculty who are nationally and internationally recognized for innovative research and teaching in the field of pharmaceutical sciences and its many disciplines.
The Pharmaceutical Sciences (PSC) Department advances basic, translational, and clinical research across the spectrum of drug discovery and development and we take pride in our collaborative initiatives and programmatic endeavors. The Pharmaceutical Sciences department is comprised of complementary cutting-edge research programs and is home to several centers of excellence: Computer Aided Drug Design, Mass Spectrometry, Bio- and Nano-technology, and Metallotherapeutics. Notably, the Center for Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation (CERSI), and Center for Research on Complex Generics are both FDA-funded. These, together with state-of-the-art facilities in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), High-Throughput Screening, and Applied Pharmaceutics, support our vibrant and collaborative interdisciplinary research environment.
This position is a full-time, tenured, 12-month appointment based at the Baltimore, Maryland Campus. This position requires scholarly activity, teaching, service to the school, campus, and the profession. We are seeking applicants with proven leadership in academia and who will provide inspiration and vision for the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department's activities. Candidates for this position must have a Ph.D., and a distinguished record in research and teaching, including a well-funded research program and ability to develop and facilitate programmatic collaborative research and funding across the pharmaceutical, biomedical, chemical, and engineering sciences. The ideal candidate should also have extensive experience in professional and graduate education and in mentoring both junior faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and students. The Chair will be expected to work with PSC department members in a collaborative, inclusive, and transparent manner to promote overall interest and development of the department faculty, staff, postdocs, and students as well as work with the Dean and other leadership within the school to fulfill its research, education and governance missions.
The University of Maryland, Baltimore campus houses schools of Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, Social Work, Law, and Dentistry. Additionally, the School of Pharmacy has a satellite campus at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Maryland. The University of Maryland enjoys an established record of successful collaboration for interprofessional practice and research collaborations with the other professional schools on campus.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS This position is responsible to the Dean of the School of Pharmacy. The position supervises all faculty in the department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Responsibilities include providing oversight and support for the department's didactic curriculum and research initiatives. This includes course development, mentoring of course coordinators, assessment, workload assignments, and other activities related to the campus and distance academic programs. Research initiatives include provide support and oversight to faculty research engagement and laboratories.
The candidate will be expected to continue innovative, independent externally funded research programs, and promote collaborative programmatic funding.
The instructional responsibilities will be to teach in the graduate and professional program. consistent with the candidate's expertise and school's focus.
Mentorship and training of students and fellows in candidate's area of research.
Develop teaching, research, and service partnerships with external collaborators.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
CHAIR RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Oversee faculty, staff, students and visitors engaged in research. Ensure research objectives of the department, school, and University are consistent. Confirm commitment to policies and regulations and take appropriate action to ensure University's commitment to compliance and maintaining a safe research environment.
Oversee the faculty in relation to their research activities, including collaborative large-scale research initiatives.
Ensure infrastructure, personnel and other resources are sufficient to meet departmental research needs and strategic vision.
Provide leadership and management for all the department's strategic initiatives and operations.
Recruit, hire and retain faculty and staff according to the needs of the department.
Faculty and staff development within the department.
Overseeing and managing the department budget.
Conduct annual reviews for department faculty and staff.
The Chair is responsible for managing faculty workloads in an equitable and transparent manner and for reviewing faculty workloads with the Dean.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related Biomedical Sciences discipline.
Appropriate faculty experience.
Record of significant collaborative extramural funding
Experience, record of excellence in teaching preferred but not required.
Criminal and education background check required.
SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSITY, SCHOOL, AND PUBLIC As Chair of the department, the individual will have service contributions to the University of Maryland Baltimore, the School of Pharmacy, and Pharmaceutical Sciences programs through serving on appropriate committee.
Participation in appropriate faculty activities (e.g., faculty assembly, department meetings, and faculty committees), professional organizations, and other endeavors is expected.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related Biomedical Sciences discipline.
Professional conduct in all dealings with students, faculty, or administration.
Leadership - Willing and able to lead.
Communications - Knowledge of communication and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform via written, oral, and visual media.
Education - Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum design principles, evidence- based teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and knowledge of measurement and assessment.
Initiative - Willing and able to take on responsibilities and challenges.
Leadership - Willing and able to lead; take charge and offer opinions and direction.
Learning Strategies - Selecting and using instructional methods and procedures appropriate in the discipline family when learning or teaching new things.
Strong interpersonal abilities with excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with students, staff, faculty.
Monitoring - Monitoring/assessing curricula to make improvements or take corrective action.
Stress Tolerance - Ability to accept criticism and deal calmly and effectively with high stress situations.

Salary Range: Base Salary and Administrative Supplement $150,000 - $250,000 (commensurate with qualifications and experience for a Full Professor). In addition to Institutional Base Salary the position will have the ability to earn potential incentive compensation up to 22% of annual institutional base salary payable bi-annually.
