Morgan State University invites applications for the position of Associate Dean for Research in the School of Social Work. The expected start date is July 1, 2023.

We seek candidates who have a strong desire to contribute to a university in Transformation and a rapidly expanding School of Social Work at one of the nation’s largest Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). The program offers the BSW, MSW, Online Masters of Social Work, PhD and the recently approved Online DSW degrees and currently has over 600 students. Both the BSW and MSW Programs are accredited by CSWE. The School’s mission is to prepare urban practitioners and leaders, policy experts, knowledge producers, research scholars and social work educators who are committed to solving urban issues and problems that improve the quality of life for urban people and communities. Special focus is on urban children, youth and families, gerontology and public health social work within a social and economic justice framework.  The school recently received ongoing state funding and establishing an Interdisciplinary Center on Urban Violence and Crime

Founded in 1867, and located in Baltimore, Maryland, Morgan State University is designated by the state as Maryland’s Preeminent Public Urban Research University and currently has an R2 Carnegie classification.  The university’s recently adopted strategic plan places emphasis on Morgan’s ascendency to an R1 research status accompanied by significant resources to the School of Social Work as well as other new and thriving academic programs on the campus.  These resources will allow the school to increase tenure/tenure track lines by 15.   Morgan’s mission is to serve a multiethnic and multiracial student body and to help ensure  that the benefits of higher education are enjoyed by a broad segment of the population. 

The university offers a comprehensive range of academic programs including 35 masters degree and 25 doctoral programs e.g. masters and doctorate in education and public health, masters and doctorate in nursing and doctorates in psychometrics, business, engineering, and history, along with 10 online degree programs including the online MSW degree.  Morgan also recently added a new College of Interdisciplinary and Continuing Studies targeting populations with some college and no degree. An Osteopathic Medical College at Morgan will open in the fall of 2024, along with the opening of a $224 million Health and Human Services state of the art Center that will house the Schools of Social Work, Community Health and Policy, the Nursing Program and Medical Technology.

The Associate Dean for Research will oversee the research and grants programs for the school. In this capacity, the Associate Dean will mentor and support faculty and doctoral students in implementing and sustaining their research productivity and dissemination of urban focused research, and in significantly increasing the acquisition of federal and state grants and contracts. The candidate will also support the Dean and the school’s management team in carrying out the overall mission of the school through the  implementation of the university’s and the school’s strategic goals related to academic initiatives and service to urban communities.



Requirements

The candidate is expected to hold a PhD in Social Work or a related field and the MSW degree, to have achieved senior faculty rank, to have a well-established record of scholarship and funded research, and to demonstrate strong dedication and interest in urbans social work practice, research and service. Prior administrative experience in social work education is required.
