Job Description

The AVPRC serves as NAU's subject matter expert for research compliance and oversees policies and issues related to conflicts of interest & commitment, animal use and care, human research, export controls & foreign influence, and the responsible conduct of research. This position also coordinates with other university offices to help oversee research activities that may include biological select agents, restricted research, recombinant DNA, dual use research of concern, or other highly regulated/controlled work. The AVPRC is expected to monitor regulatory developments, along with the proposed and current work of research staff; introducing and overseeing changes (when necessary) to university policies and activities to ensure institutional compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

The AVPRC has official status as the university's designated Institutional Official (IO) when dealing with federal and state agencies and regulations. As such, the AVPRC serves as the institutional officer for the protection of human subjects and research animals and for research integrity.

  • Provide strategic leadership for the Office of Research Compliance supporting the visions, plans and programs of the President and Vice President for Research.
  • Responsible for establishing, maintaining, and implementing all university policies and procedures related to research compliance, export control compliance, use of controlled substances in research, monitoring foreign influence on research/federal funding, research related risk management, animal safety, human subjects & clinical trials, and managing conflicts of interest/commitment in research.
  • Collaborate with university leadership to review and update relevant university policies to ensure cohesiveness and consistency as well as to ensure compliance policies are being enforced.
  • Collaborate with other university offices across campus to address regulatory and compliance issues with overlapping oversight, e.g., Office of Sponsored Projects, NAU Innovations, Environmental Health & Safety, Native American Initiatives, Purchasing & Contracts, HIPAA Compliance, Information Technology, etc.
  • Establish collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, and students to achieve research goals while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and university policies.
  • Develop and implement plans to ensure institutional compliance with new and evolving regulations and policies. Specifically, ensure compliance with annual disclosure, attestation, and other required institutional assurances.
  • Organize and lead distinct monitoring functions and compliance oversight groups including the IRB, COI Committees, etc.; Institutional Official for IACUC, IRB, and IBC.
  • Coordinate with the Office of General Counsel, Risk Management, etc. to address risks to the University and to respond to requests for information with a high-level understanding of security, confidentiality, and potential liabilities to the institution
  • Lead or assist in investigations arising from allegations of non-compliance and serve as NAU's Research Integrity Officer.
  • Supervise assigned personnel, which includes hiring, work allocation, training, and problem resolution; evaluate performance and make recommendations for personnel actions.
  • Serve in a leadership capacity for compliance topics at a state and national level.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Master's, J.D., or Ph.D. degree required. Degree must be conferred at the time of application.
    • The following experience is required:
      • 5-7 years' supervisory experience,
      • 8+ years in research administration or research compliance administration, and
      • 4+ years leading across organizations or job families.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's, J.D., or Ph.D. in life science, physical sciences, social sciences, research administration or related field.
    • Professional experience related to the minimum qualifications which demonstrate depth and breadth of expertise in regulatory requirements, compliance functions, and associated best practices in university research setting.
    • Experience engaging in sponsored research as an investigator, professional research administrator, or in a research compliance role.
    • Evidence of commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive work environment that respects diverse perspectives.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    • Previous regulatory experience in academic health science centers, research institutes, or similar research-intensive environments.
    • Considerable administrative acumen in a higher education environment.
    • Comprehensive knowledge and current subject matter expertise of federal, state and local policies, procedures, and regulations relating to human subjects research, animal care and use in research, controlled imports/exports and embargos, biosafety research, and other applicable research compliance regulations.
    • Experience with developing and administering research related training programs directed at regulatory and compliance responsibilities.
    • Experience interacting with federal and state regulatory agencies.
    • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze, summarize, and effectively present data.
    • Effective communicator and collaborator.
    • Excellent communication and writing skills along with current knowledge of multi-platform software and both PC and Mac computer environments.
    • Excellent project management skills.
    • Ability to resolve complex problems and issues in a timely and collaborative manner.

    Background Information

    This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing.     Anticipated salary begins at $145,713. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.


    This is an Administrator (ADM) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); 22 days of vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election.
